A vital dog is what every owner wants!

VITALITY

Energy and stamina

But sluggishness does not belong to a healthy animal. Not even if they are known to be quiet. What could this behaviour indicate?

When a dog’s normal behaviour changes, this should alert the owner. Because changing behaviour means that something has changed for the dog. But what?

A change is not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes your pet just needs to get used to things or recover, for example, after a move or an intense day out.

Sluggishness can result from the following causes:

Infections Whenever a foreign substance, invader or damage threatens the body, an inflammatory reaction is triggered to render it harmless and to dissolve it. This costs your dog energy, as a result of which he becomes slower and sleeps a lot.

Chronic disorders resulting from a physical malfunction can also take their toll on the dog’s body. These include heart or liver problems, anaemia, diabetes and thyroid problems.

In addition, an unbalanced diet can affect your four-legged friend’s energy level. The right food helps your dog feel good in his skin.

Appetite and nausea

If your dog experiences nausea due to eating too quickly, consider feeding smaller amounts of food several times a day or mixing the dry food with water. You can also consider splitting the meal, giving one half of the food first and the second half fifteen minutes later.

Vets often use a variety of prescription drugs to help dogs with nausea. As with people, feeding your dog a home-made light meal is a good alternative solution. Foods such as rice, boiled potatoes, and chicken can help with vomiting and nausea. In addition, natural remedies are often as effective as hemp supplements.

A dog that does not eat for a short period

This is a very common complaint. It is very important to see if the dog is generally ill and if there are any other complaints as well. These determine to a large extent whether it can be urgent or more serious. Important questions to ask when a dog has not eaten for a short time are:

Is the dog still lively and happy? If a dog does not eat but is still cheerful, the chance that it is innocent is much greater.

Does the dog have any other symptoms? Does the dog have any other symptoms? These may be a clue to the cause. For example:

  • Vomiting and Diarrhoea
  • Coughing and stinking breath
  • Drinking and/or urinating a lot
  • A fat or bloated abdomen
  • Pale mucous membranes
  • Rapid breathing
  • Not walking or walking with difficulty

If a dog refuses to eat for a short time, but he has no other symptoms and is still happy, the cause is usually innocent. If in doubt, however, it is wise to contact your vet. Many dogs are hypersensitive to gluten or have a poor tolerance for standard protein sources such as chicken and beef. Cannadog contains salmon and turkey as protein sources, both of which are easily digestible and can often provide relief to dogs with sensitive stomachs.

Age-related complaints

The point is, the senior years occur at different ages in different races, and probably much earlier than most people realise. As a general rule, 7 years is considered senior.

Many dogs, like many people, are happy and spend their senior years in good health. But no matter how healthy we are, or our dogs are, it is not the same as being a young person. Seniors have less energy, less stamina, less ability to recover from vigorous activity, injury or illness.

Obesity can be a problem in senior dogs. If your older dog is obese, it is important to get his weight down so that joints and internal organs do not suffer from the extra weight. In extremely old dogs, weight loss and lack of appetite can become a more serious problem. These dogs need to eat enough protein to slow down muscle wasting.

Dogs with a congenital joint problem, such as hip dysplasia or patellar luxation, will experience more pain, inflammation and other effects of their disease as they age.

Cardiovascular and renal diseases are especially prevalent in older dogs. Unfortunately, both can lead to loss of appetite and loss of muscle mass. Cardiovascular disease can lead to fluid in the lungs, resulting in persistent coughing and difficulty in breathing. Always consult your veterinarian if coughing persists.

Some seniors have behavioural changes. A dog that is normally house-trained but now suddenly has “accidents” in the house can tell you something about its health. He may have kidney disease, diabetes, a urinary tract infection – or even cognitive changes. Only a veterinary examination can tell you which one. A dog that usually allows itself to be brushed but suddenly pulls away when you try to clean its ear may have an ear infection or even a tooth infection. A dog that normally likes crunchy food but suddenly stops eating may have kidney disease, infected teeth, or many other possible problems. A usually friendly dog that starts barking may simply not feel well, or may be in pain due to arthritis, for example. Do not punish your dog for feeling bad; find the cause and do what you can to restore his good spirit! Common causes of behavioural change and anxiety in older dogs are:

  1. Sickness or pain
  2. Loss of bladder or bowel control
  3. Sensory failures

There are ways in which you can ensure that your four-legged friend has a full and happy life in his final years. General welfare for our pets includes everything from plenty of exercise, a nice and safe home, and of course a healthy diet.

Epilepsy

Pet attacks vary from animal to animal – they can be subtle or severe, a one-off event or a repeated occurrence.

Canine epilepsy is one of the “silent epidemics” affecting dogs all over the world. Dog attacks are not as often discussed as hip dysplasia or fleas and ticks but that does not mean it cannot happen to your dog. Studies report that Idiopathic Epilepsy (the most common canine seizure disorder) occurs in 0.5 to 5.7 per cent of all dogs.

Signs of epileptic seizures and convulsions in dogs

Just like humans, dogs often get warning signals when an attack is coming. The warning comes in the form of an aura, but not the kind of aura people with migraines and other neurological disorders experience.

Your dog’s aura will make him or her feel and act stressed, scared, dazed or worried. The pet may also experience muscle and limb contractions, suffer from visual disturbances, and possibly even lose bowel and bladder control. A dog with seizures may also be in some sort of altered mental state before a seizure begins, so be on the lookout for these and other neurological symptoms.

When a seizure strikes, your dog may fall on one side and become stiff. Other common symptoms are excessive panting, drooling, foaming at the mouth, vocalisation, paddling with all four limbs and fluttering eyes. Your dog may also lose bladder or bowel control during an attack. The average duration of attack is about two minutes.

Once the attack is over, your dog can act as if nothing had happened. However, most post-attack dogs will show altered behavioural traits up to 18-24 hours afterwards. This includes confusion and disorientation as well as aimless wandering, compulsive behaviour, momentary blindness, pacing, increased thirst, and even increased appetite. Recovery may be immediate or take up to 24 hours.

Seizures and epilepsy in dogs can be frustrating because your dog can often recover before you even get to the vet. But there are plenty of natural dog attack supplements available to help your epileptic dog.

From research on canine epilepsy, it is becoming increasingly clear that pet nutrition – similar to human nutrition – can play a vital role in managing disease and prolonging life.

Apart from the anti-inflammatory effects, dog food should also support the dog’s overall immune system. A robust immune response is vital to prevent relatively minor problems from becoming serious health problems. Researchers are currently working on studies that examine the relationship between the health of the immune system and the onset of attacks.

Decades of research have shown that hemp may have remarkable anticonvulsant effects with minimal neurotoxicity. It can reduce neuronal activity and the severity of seizures. Hempseed oil has an effect on various endogenous receptors throughout the body, which in turn affect a multitude of neuropharmacological mechanisms of the brain.
